Pokrycie dachowe jest niezwykle istotną częścią domu, jako że chroni ono ludzi i mienie, oraz stanowi ważny element ogólnego wyglądu i wartości budynku. Dach powinien być więc wykonany z wytrzymałego, estetycznego i dostosowanego do warunków klimatycznych materiału – według powszechnej opinii wymagania te spełniają dachówki.
Clay tiles
Traditional fired clay roofs have been used for centuries and feature many benefits for homeowners. They are extremely durable and weather resistant and thus, if fixed and maintained properly, can withstand high winds and bad storms. Apart from being structurally sound – they can last for a hundred and fifty years – clay roof tiles provide good thermal and sound insulation, are non-combustible and have excellent colourfast properties.
Clay tiles are generally available in two shapes: plain (flat) and profiled tiles. The final appearance of a tiled roof depends on its pitch and complexity of structure – dormers, hips, valleys, gables, eaves and ridges.
The primary disadvantage of clay tiles is their weight. Before installing, it might be necessary to verify that the rafters and trusses used to form the roof will support the load of tiles. Another drawback is that clay roof tiles are more difficult to install than other roofing products; they are also not recommended for flat roofs.
Metal roofs
Metal corrugated roofs are used on residential as well as commercial buildings. This versatile type of roofing can be made of several metals (aluminum, steel, stainless steel, copper and zinc alloys), each of which has different properties and may come in different styles, colour coats and shapes. Metal roofs are durable, resistant to weather, fire, rodents, and rot, and can be installed both on gently and steeply pitched roofs.
Recently, there have been major advances in the design and construction of metal roofs, which has made them more energy efficient, whereas soundproof insulation eliminates the noise that rain or hail makes when coming into contact with the metal sheathing. However, although metal roofing is virtually maintenance-free, it can also be easily scratched, dulled or chipped.
Metal roofing material is generally formed into multi-shingles and sheets, so the installation work can often proceed more quickly and efficiently than with other materials, which contributes to lowering the overall cost of installation and shortens the exposure of the unprotected house to unfavourable weather conditions.
